Entitled Experts Part 1

It starts with a foundation. Everything needs a proper foundation to stand. I sit here, frustrated, confused, maybe a little angry, and most of all saddened by the responses I have seen as of late to the world in terms of what is happening and where God is in the mix and I have noticed something.

Here in America, we treat God like he’s supposed to be Santa Clause. We go; God, here is my list of things that I want from you, and if you do these things I’ll be a good little boy (or girl). We bargain that if God will put up, then we will put up. Then things happen in the world. Primarily, these things happen because the world, contrary to our desired belief, runs rapid with sin and destruction from Satan and his cohort of fallen. They want to distract and entangle and confuse and manipulate and deceive and pursue things to be done and, by all accounts, frame or pin it on God’s lack of doing, even though they are the ones to blame.

We as people of a fallen world and wrecked with sin society are perfect prey for such things and as we look at the world around us we question our resolve to God’s presence in this world and since God doesn’t work the way we want Him to work (since he isn’t Santa) we get frustrated and leave His presence and ignore His presence and what is worse is we try to discredit the fact that His presence is the only thing that can fix this world.

We don’t worry ourselves with questions that truly matter like “Do I believe God has a plan for me even though it doesn’t look like my plan” or “do I really want a God that I can convince” or “Does God really owe me an answer to my questions and would I want it if he did answer me”? Instead, we look at the wrong and have a hard time believing in a God that won’t clean up our mess for us. This is the thing that frustrates me.

Maybe you did this, but when my mother told me to clean up after myself or to take responsibility for my actions it never once occurred to me that she was any less my mother or any less real in my life. Nor did I feel like she loved me any less. So why do we do that with God? Why is everything God’s fault? Just like Adam and Eve, we fall prey to the deceptions around us and find ourselves in a position where we merely believe our own intelligence and our own understanding is absolute and it isn’t. If I have to read about another friend on Facebook who goes on a rant and discusses the intricacies of their beliefs on God and all they seem to be doing is trying to personify God instead of placing God in a seat of glory and honor that He deserves I am going to go crazy. Maybe I’ll become a hermit or something or start a club that doesn’t blame God for the fallen state of man but rather accepts that responsibility is ours and we have to be change if we want to see change even though it isn’t popular and isn’t politically correct at times.

Then again, why would our generation stand against a squall? Our generation does not like to do hard things. Why not just use a social media outlet to explain, not very well, your findings of who God to be (findings you didn’t look into the actual source, the Bible, or a credible source for, but again relied on man’s intelligence as absolute; probably in some philosophy book somewhere or on the internet in an opinion based forum like this one) and why you don’t believe in Him any longer (“because I really wanted my shiny red bike and I didn’t get it!”) and I’ll be over here praying for our generation.

Because the problem with our generation is that we all claim to be experts on theology but what is reigning true is we have no foundation. We have let other people clean up our mistakes and we have treated God like He is our slave when things go wrong. As if God owes us anything. We begun to treat God like an employee with a set of do’s and do not’s and a job description he has to adhere to with fine print saying “and other duties as assigned” and because of this thinking the very foundation of our Theology has been wrong from the start. Everything started out wrong and that’s why our generation gets mad when the house we built upon our foundations ends up crooked, or when it falls apart at the first storm. We have forgotten about God’s grace. As Paul reminds us “But God, who is so rich in mercy, and he loved us so much, that even though we were dead because of our sins, he gave us life when he raised Christ from the dead. (It is only by God’s grace that you have been saved!) For he raised us from the dead along with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ Jesus… God saved you by His grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it.” Ephesians 2:4-6 & 8 NLT

So here we sit. Blaming God for our faults and treating Him like He does not exist. But God, in the midst of our selfishness, pride, narcissism and ego did something absolutely extraordinary by an event in history that gives us all a chance to restore relationship with Him. And here we sit, blaming Him and waiting for Him to clean us up instead of acknowledging that He did clean us up already.

And now everyone is ranting. And now everyone is no longer believing in God because He doesn’t fit in our box and doesn’t act like an employee (because He’s God!). And now I guess it’s my turn to rant. I’ll never stop believing in God and I will never stop revering Him like He’s God; in my words, my actions and my life.
