Light vs Dark: Part II

Gauging your wattage can be on of the most dangerous steps in understanding how bright you are shining for the Kingdom. I will tell you why. The reason that gauging your wattage can be extremely dangerous is it could cause you to start comparing your wattage and not gauging your wattage. As established in the previous post, every light, no matter how bright, will make a difference and have an impact on the darkness. Last time I checked, a candle or a match can light an entire room.

Comparing your wattage can get extremely dangerous because it could cause you to do two things. The first is it could potentially create a wedge between yourself and the person you are comparing yourself with. The second thing you could do is misjudge your wattage. Let me explain both.

The wedge is dangerous because we should be at peace with everyone, as far as it depends on you. This is Biblical. God even inspired about the fact that if you have a wedge between you and your brother, it is best to leave your offering at the door and do your best to fix that wedge. Disagreements will come up, but a good practice is to spend as much time mending the disagreement as you did disagreeing. The more wedges you have in your life, the dimmer your light.

The second part to discuss is the misjudging of your wattage. When you get in the game of comparing, there is a possibility that you misjudge your wattage in the fashion that comparison is not the best way to define wattage. Each light bulb is specifically designed to have a specific wattage. A 40 watt bulb would not compare itself to an 80 watt bulb. The 40 watt bulb would simply shine all 40 watts. I hope this makes sense. When you are designed to be a certain wattage, comparing to other wattage is discouraging.

The best way to gauge your wattage is to search your heart. The condition of your heart matters when discussing wattage. There are plenty of practices that can be done to “max your wattage”. The first and foremost is to pursue Jesus Christ with your whole heart. Disciplines like reading your Bible, praying, meditating on the Word, listening to podcasts, carefully reading select authors… etc, these are all ways to max your wattage. But when you think about it, it is fickle to think about ourselves in such terms as wattage.

You are a creation of the most high God. He created you in his own image. Whether Athiest, Buddhist, Christian, or “insert whatever belief system here” you bare the image of God wherever you go. And further more, if you believe in Jesus Christ’s resurrection, you have a light inside of you.

The point is not to be a different wattage, the point is to max out your current wattage as best you can. The point is to shine as bright as you possibly can so the world can see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven. The point is to be in a position where you are less concerned about the darkness and more concerned about making an impact on it. The point is that even a little bit of light, goes a long way.
