Measures

This week, through two separate instances, I was reminded how I will never measure up. More specifically, I was reminded of how I will continue to let people down, without even trying. Being a sensitive leader, I wrestled with this realization. I wrestle with it still. You will not be able to meet the needs of everyone you come into contact with.

Everyone has a specific expectation of a leader that is tailored to their personal preference. They may want a leader who is available, relational, present, strong-willed, clear, precise… etc. The list goes on and on. I’ve been guilty of this same desire so many times, I can’t even be upset when these expectations are placed on me because I get it.

Through my time as a leader, I have come to realize, that these expectations cannot be met. Once an expectation is placed on you, there is only one inevitable outcome… you’re going to let people down.

The very people you wish you’d never let down, are the ones who will feel the let down. So try to take some time to gather some clarity, and try not to overthink it. You’ll never measure up, so don’t try.

Continue to grow yourself in humility, and grow your team in their confidence, and you’ll be on your way to clarity. Consistency is the key. Remain who you are, and hopefully, over time, you’ll find yourself in a position where the only person you’re trying to measure up to, is you. After all, you’re the only one you can control.
