Chasing the Wild Goose

To say it’s been a while is an understatement. When I was younger, in my college days, one of my mentors and a guy I look up to and ask for his wise counsel to this day, was giving a sermon series called “Chasing the Wild Goose”. I loved this series. It was all about recognizing the Holy Spirit’s movement in our lives and chasing after it. This series is my inspiration for the series of posts coming to this blog.

The Book of Jeremiah has been my focus lately in my quiet times. There’s this beautiful conversation between God, Jeremiah, and the people of Israel (whom God chose and brought out of slavery in Egypt). Some of my favorite texts of Scripture come from this book. The utter dilemma between God’s love and God’s justice is evident. God is love and God is equally just. In Jeremiah 9:23-24 the Lord is speaking through Jeremiah and says this “This is what the Lord says: ‘let not the wise boast of their wisdom, or the strong boast of their strength, or the rich boast of their riches, but let the one who boasts boast about this: that they have the understanding to know me, that I am the Lord, who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on earth, for in these I delight,’ declares the Lord.”

I love this passage. “Let them boast that they have the understanding to know me”. It’s not just about understanding. It’s about the understanding that God is knowable, accessible and reachable.

When we have the understanding to know Him, we have a better understanding of His will in our lives. Enter the Holy Spirt into the scene. Jesus promised us a helper. A comforter and a companion that would empower us to speak boldly in Jesus name. God sent the Holy Spirit to our aid.

In my past, sheepishly I’ll admit that I always viewed the Holy Spirit as this invisible force that makes me know when I’ve done wrong or right and all of that. In my studies and understanding of the Holy Spirit I’ve been actually embarrassingly wrong. The Holy Spirit is a force to be reckoned with. It’s not some silly, little ghost that’s begging people to like Him. The Holy Spirit is part of the trinity. God’s fullness in spirit sent down to help us navigate the world we occupy. Culture alone begs need for the Holy Spirit.

So allow me to introduce you, to the wildest goose of them all, the Holy Spirit of God which you have access to. Elisha was a man just like us. He leaned on the Matchless Power of God to do what he did. You have access to that. I’ll be exploring the topic of the Holy Spirit and invite you to join me as I write about Him.

The next post in this series will be about refocusing ourselves and recognizing the Holy Spirit (Wild Goose).
