It’s difficult to go through life without comparing. It’s almost like its hard wired into us. We compare our strengths against everyone else’s weaknesses. We compare our faults to everyone highlights and so on and so forth. Maybe this is why so many people have gravitated toward social media as an entity of comparison.
Social media is great, or at least it can be. I mean, I’m going to post this blog on multiple platforms in hopes that it reaches the multitudes of the 10 of you who are reading this and in even bigger hopes that when it reaches you, you will find some sort of wisdom in what I’m saying. But what is it that drives us to compare ourselves and is it, ultimately, helping us get further faster?
Is it possible that the first time comparison was found on earth it would be recorded? The answer is yes. Maybe it wasn’t the very first time, but it still counts. Cain kills Abel early in the narrative of Gods word. This death was largely due to the comparison between offerings given to God. Let me be clear, God was not comparing them, Cain was. As a result, death ensued and thus the story is suspended in time forever hopefully as a catalyst to stop the comparison trap.
To no avail. In this day and age we compare ourselves far too often to far too many people. I’d like to take one more minute of your time and ask you to simply stop comparing yourself to other people, especially through the medium of social media because their highlights are what you see, not their realities. Stop comparing yourself to others, and start comparing yourself to yourself. If you believe in Jesus, you have an old self and a new self. Paul talks a lot about this in the New Testament. The constant battle to fight to be better than you were yesterday should be your biggest battle of the day. Do not keep up with the Jones’ family. Do not compare yourself to social media and quit looking at what you don’t have or wish you had. Strive to become better every day. Compare those results.
