Basketball and Life

I love the sounds and smells of a gym floor. There are few things the hard wood and basketball court cannot do for me. It’s a place where I’ve always found the things I’ve been looking for.

Basketball had a strong pull in my life. I found God at a basketball camp at Bay Shore Camp in Michigan when I was thirteen. I found my drive in my freshman year as I made varsity for the first time. I found my dedication in the summers I would spend hours in the gym shooting free throws, running sprints and working on ball handling. I find solace when I am troubled even now as I am 28 years old.

When life comes at me with circumstances I don’t quite understand or am not quite sure I measure up to face, I find myself on a basketball court somewhere shooting, thinking, sitting and pondering.

On the gym floor there are a lot of lessons I’ve learned. I learned how to be a team player. One of the most important aspects of this life is the desire to not go at it alone. You need your team. They pick you up, dust you off, cover your blind spots and help push you to become a better person and athlete. I learned how to take my shot. When it’s there, you cannot hesitate. You need to pull the trigger. I learned you can take bad shots. Many people like to think there aren’t bad consequences, only experience. Well if experience has taught me anything it’s that there are bad consequences. There are good ones but a bad shot can get you into a lot more troublesome position than you anticipated. Not only that but it puts your team at risk of losing as well.

I think more clearly on the court. I can examine things and foresee outcomes because I’ve studied the game of basketball. A little knowledge and a little practice, and I’ve found myself  to enjoy the game.

I think a lot about life in terms of basketball. If that’s the case then the Bible becomes the game plan for me. The goal is to continue to study it. God would be the coach, the goal is to continue to listen to him. Life is the game, the goal would be to continue to play it as best as we possibly can.

My pleasure! Whatever you’re in or going through, don’t go at it alone. Cheers brother!
