I am not a wise man. But I counsel with wise men. Is it not funny how the wisest man to ever walk the earth was one of the biggest advocates for people seeking wisdom? Solomon was not just a king, he was assured by God that there would be no one wiser in all the world than he, yet he sought more counsel and looked through the situations presented him with such dignity and grace, some might wonder why he would seek counsel.
I have three main reasons as to why it is wise to seek counsel. I have three big reasons that this is the wisest thing you can do, if you would like to be wise.
1. Wise people know that they are not the wisest people walking the earth. Ever hear that turn of phrase “wise men still seek him”? Simply put, wise people know there is much more wisdom to obtain.
2. Wise people know that they are not the wisest people in all situations. You may be the absolute expert in arithmetic, but does that mean that you are an expert in history? No, not necessarily.
3. Wise people seek the right counsel. I will give you some credit, you probably have a little more wisdom than the next guy, right? I am sure you do. But is it not true that sometimes people give you advice that does not at all sound like wise advice? Be careful, choose the right counsel. For me it is a great network of men that I believe God has placed in my life. It is indeed a counsel of the round table kind. I bounce ideas off of them and all of them respond to me.
Allow me to give you a hint if I may: the right counsel are probably not all going to be the same age as you are, some may be, but not all.
You think I am lucky, right? I have a counsel on call for me at any given time, what a great thing! Let me tell you what is not so great; the amount of work it took to get there. I am talking about hours of work and lots of vulnerability. Plenty of tears and a lot of fear of the unknown. These men have earned the right to be in my decision-making process.
I am not a wise man, but I counsel with wise men.
