There is a poem by William Earnest Henley that engulfs my thought every time I read it, hear it, or catch wind of it and am reminded of it. The poem is called Invictus. It was the inspiration for a popular movie that recently came out (2009ish) entitled Invictus.
I am not so worried about the movie as I am about the poem. Here is an exert from the movie with the poem being read by Morgan Freeman. Listen to the words, let it take you into the deepest thinking of your paradigm.
I bring this poem up because it means a lot to me for a simple reason, I am a Christian. I am not sure if William Henley was a believer in God but with the way this poem is written I have to believe that there is something in him that believed in God. Just listen to the word, think about the night that covers you. This poem is full of hope and quite honestly offers a foundational message.
If you are the maker of your fate, and you are the captain of your soul (talking about free will here). Is it not amazing to know that there is a place you could “dock your ship”. You have full control over what you decide to do with the cards that are dealt for you. For me, obviously, I have chosen to follow God. I have chosen to believe and place my whole world where God is actively involved. He does not force me to believe this though. It is a choice that I have to make. I am the maker of my fate, I am the captain of my soul. At the end of the day, my fate, my soul, my life, my actions are on me. I am accountable.
Love this poem, hope you enjoy it too.

This spurs thinking further, do you not want to live a life that is worthy of holding accountability?
